Week of 10/15/13

Biology Classes What a short week we have and so much to do! Tuesday - we will check your review sheets and get ready for our biochem chapter test. Wednesday- many of you will be taking thePSAT so those in class will have study time for Thursday's test. Thursday- Test Day...Good Luck! AP Biology Focus for the week will be photosynthesis it is one of the toughest topics of the year so get ready. Our days will be a mix of lecture and lab activities dealing with Light and food production in plants.

Week of September 30 2013

Biology We continue our Chemistry of life theme this week. Monday we will work to finish our properties of water lab.I'm pretty sure there won't be time during the class to complete analysis questions so you have some homework for Tuesday when the lab ios due. Tuesday in class lecture on pH with a worksheet to reinforce properties of water. Wednesday will start with a lecture on enzymes followed by a lab if we have time . The topic will be enzymes. Lab will continue onto Thursday with lab report due Friday.No quiz this week! AP Biology Monday will be a Quiz on cells followed by a lecture on cellular transport. There is a packet of worksheets on transport due for Wednesday Tuesday will be a lab on cellular fractionation with organelle identification. Wednesday will be cell wrap up with Jeopardy review on Thursday and test on Friday. Notebooks must be turned in to be graded on Thursday.

Week of 9/27,2013

BIOLOGY This week we will start our new chapter on the chemistry of life. Monday , Tuesday and wednesday will be lecture days followed by reinforcement worksheets. There should be plenty of time in class to complete the assignments so you shouldn't have any homework. Thursday will be Lab day Properties of water wwill be demonstrated. The lab is a long one so we will probably need Part of Frday and Monday to finish it off. Quiz this week is Friday!!! This week we introduce the cell, a familar topic to everyone I hope. Monday will be lecture on the Primordial Soup Theory followed up with lab on Coacervates. Tuesday lecture on cell membrane and the surface area to volume lab using potatoes. Wednesday- students will complete note sheet on cellular organelles.Thursday will be a library day for research on cells. Friday lab on cellular fractionation. I'm planning a cell quiz for Monday so be ready!

Week of September 17 2013

Biology, We will be finishing off our Introductory unit on Biology this week. Hard to believe we are 4 weeks in already. Monday-Continue with microscope lab completing parts 2 & 3 Completed lab report will be due Tuesday. Tuesday-Today is a wrap up day. There are a few straggler notes and an in class worksheet. Wednesday-Jeopardy review for Test Thursday. All test material is in your notebook! Thursday- TEST DAY Friday movie on microscopic life AP Biology, Monday and Tuesday we will spend working on enzyme Labs dealing with catalase. Remember notebooks are due Tuesday with labs on polymers.Wednesday in our first knock your socks off test days. It will include chapters1-3 and enzymes. Thursday We will introduce our next topic...Photosyntesis and respiration which are the most difficult topics of the year.Chlorophyll lab is scheduled for Thursday unless the pep rally gets in the way.

Week of September 9 2013

Academic Biology This week our focus is on the history of the science of Biology. What is life will be our focus question as we explore criteria that is used in determining if something is truly "alive". Monday and Tuesday will be discussion Lecture Characteristics of life...followed by a worksheet Wednesday we will review parts of the microscope and proper use. There is a worksheet that will be completed as we talk. Thursday and Friday will be our microscope lab with completed lab report due Monday 9/16. AP BIOLOGY Our focus for the week is Organic molecules and Life Monday will be a lecture on carbs and fats with a worksheetto reinforce new concepts. Tuesday we will lecture proteins and nucleic acids update worksheet. Wednesday activities will focus on enzymes. We will try a new demo lab on enzymes. Thursday and Friday hands on activities with the enzyme catalase. Looking forward next week Monday review and Tuesday Test on chapters 1-3.

Week of September 2nd.

Biology We continue working with scientific method this week and will be building on the framework we developed last week.Hope science is going well and you are feeling comfortable. Tuesday=+ Wednesday-Today in class you will be assigned a "Problem"that needs solving.Thank heavens you know scientific method! Working in a team of 3-4 your challenge is to create a poster demonstrating steps of scientific method that would be required to solve the problem.Remember to STUDY FOR YOUR QUIZ. Thursday- QUIZ today followed by dependent and independent variable worksheet due Friday. Friday will end our week with a full day lecture on Characteristics of life. AP BIOLOGY Our week starts with a continuation of Properties of water, specifically pH. Tuesday- Lab using red cabbage to establish a pH scale. Wednesday- We are wrapping up our discussion on properties of water focusing on Movement of water across a cell membrane. Lecture will be Followed by lab set up on osmosis. Thursday we will read lab results determining sugar concentration based on % mass change. We will also be calculating water potential based on these results. Friday will be our first quiz on Themes of Bio and Properties of Water.

Week of August 26 2013

Academic Biology Welcome back! I'm looking forward to an exciting year in biology. Were are starting right in with chapter1 what is science? Monday-cover classroom rules exit slip with a definition of science that will be discussed in class Tuesday. Tuesday-Complete talk to the text article started in class Wed. Distinguish science from pseudoscience...Read you articles and descide if you are dealing with true science or not. Answer questions explaining your reasoning.We will work as teams with one assignment submitted from each. Thursday- Observation and inference will be the topic for the day.We will start with lecture and close with a worksheet that reinforces the concept. It will not be graded. Friday-Lecture We close our first week together with a revisit to the steps in scientific method.Have a great weekend.
