Week of 12/16/2013

This week we will finish photosynthesis and begin cellulr respiration.Sadly we won't have enough timeto finish the topic before break so we will have to wait for our test until we get back. Monday-TEST photosynthesis Tuesday-lecture anaerobic respiration make up tests as needed Wednesday- Lab anaerobic respiration Thursday finish lab report Friday biology scategories...Merry Christmas! AP Biology- This week we are continuing our discussion of evolution. You have 2 lab reports due Thursday. One on beaks of finches and the other on fishy frequency. Thursday is also the day we will have a quiz on populations and evolution. Monday in class we will start to work on the skits which will be presented on Friday. Look whose coming to dinner.

Biology. Short week this week with parent conferences on Monday....not to mention counting down to Thanksgiving break. We still have alot to cover on cells and cellular processes Our focus this week is Meiosis and the cell cycle. Tuesday- Lab simulation on the stasges of he cell cycle. With stage identification and calculation of time spent in phase. These are due Wednesday. Wednesday -Lecture "When the cell cycle goes wrong" followed by a reading strategy on cancer. Thursday-Lecture- Comparison of the cell cycle and Meiosis. Check cell cycle worksheets Friday-Lecture OOgenesis and spermatogenesis Monday -11/25 Jeopardy review of the cell cycle and meiosis Tuesday will be TEST DAY with makeups and assignment catchup on Wednesday. Biology Classes What a short week we have and so much to do! Tuesday - we will check your review sheets and get ready for our biochem chapter test. Week of September 30 2013

Biology We continue our Chemistry of life theme this week. Monday we will work to finish our properties of water lab.I'm pretty sure there won't be time during the class to complete analysis questions so you have some homework for Tuesday when the lab ios due. Tuesday in class lecture on pH with a worksheet to reinforce properties of water. Wednesday will start with a lecture on enzymes followed by a lab if we have time . The topic will be enzymes. Lab will continue onto Thursday with lab report due Friday.No quiz this week! AP Biology Monday will be a Quiz on cells followed by a lecture on cellular transport. There is a packet of worksheets on transport due for Wednesday Tuesday will be a lab on cellular fractionation with organelle identification. Wednesday will be cell wrap up with Jeopardy review on Thursday and test on Friday. Notebooks must be turned in to be graded on Thursday.

Week of 9/27,2013

BIOLOGY This week we will start our new chapter on the chemistry of life. Monday , Tuesday and wednesday will be lecture days followed by reinforcement worksheets. There should be plenty of time in class to complete the assignments so you shouldn't have any homework. Thursday will be Lab day Properties of water wwill be demonstrated. The lab is a long one so we will probably need Part of Frday and Monday to finish it off. Quiz this week is Friday!!! This week we introduce the cell, a familar topic to everyone I hope. Monday will be lecture on the Primordial Soup Theory followed up with lab on Coacervates. Tuesday lecture on cell membrane and the surface area to volume lab using potatoes. Wednesday- students will complete note sheet on cellular organelles.Thursday will be a library day for research on cells. Friday lab on cellular fractionation. I'm planning a cell quiz for Monday so be ready!

Week of September 17 2013

Biology, We will be finishing off our Introductory unit on Biology this week. Hard to believe we are 4 weeks in already. Monday-Continue with microscope lab completing parts 2 & 3 Completed lab report will be due Tuesday. Tuesday-Today is a wrap up day. There are a few straggler notes and an in class worksheet. Wednesday-Jeopardy review for Test Thursday. All test material is in your notebook! Thursday- TEST DAY Friday movie on microscopic life AP Biology, Monday and Tuesday we will spend working on enzyme Labs dealing with catalase. Remember notebooks are due Tuesday with labs on polymers.Wednesday in our first knock your socks off test days. It will include chapters1-3 and enzymes. Thursday We will introduce our next topic...Photosyntesis and respiration which are the most difficult topics of the year.Chlorophyll lab is scheduled for Thursday unless the pep rally gets in the way.

Week of September 9 2013

Academic Biology This week our focus is on the history of the science of Biology. What is life will be our focus question as we explore criteria that is used in determining if something is truly "alive". Monday and Tuesday will be discussion Lecture Characteristics of life...followed by a worksheet Wednesday we will review parts of the microscope and proper use. There is a worksheet that will be completed as we talk. Thursday and Friday will be our microscope lab with completed lab report due Monday 9/16. AP BIOLOGY Our focus for the week is Organic molecules and Life Monday will be a lecture on carbs and fats with a worksheetto reinforce new concepts. Tuesday we will lecture proteins and nucleic acids update worksheet. Wednesday activities will focus on enzymes. We will try a new demo lab on enzymes. Thursday and Friday hands on activities with the enzyme catalase. Looking forward next week Monday review and Tuesday Test on chapters 1-3.

Week of September 2nd.

Biology We continue working with scientific method this week and will be building on the framework we developed last week.Hope science is going well and you are feeling comfortable. Tuesday=+ Wednesday-Today in class you will be assigned a "Problem"that needs solving.Thank heavens you know scientific method! Working in a team of 3-4 your challenge is to create a poster demonstrating steps of scientific method that would be required to solve the problem.Remember to STUDY FOR YOUR QUIZ. Thursday- QUIZ today followed by dependent and independent variable worksheet due Friday. Friday will end our week with a full day lecture on Characteristics of life. AP BIOLOGY Our week starts with a continuation of Properties of water, specifically pH. Tuesday- Lab using red cabbage to establish a pH scale. Wednesday- We are wrapping up our discussion on properties of water focusing on Movement of water across a cell membrane. Lecture will be Followed by lab set up on osmosis. Thursday we will read lab results determining sugar concentration based on % mass change. We will also be calculating water potential based on these results. Friday will be our first quiz on Themes of Bio and Properties of Water.

Week of August 26 2013

Academic Biology Welcome back! I'm looking forward to an exciting year in biology. Were are starting right in with chapter1 what is science? Monday-cover classroom rules exit slip with a definition of science that will be discussed in class Tuesday. Tuesday-Complete talk to the text article started in class Wed. Distinguish science from pseudoscience...Read you articles and descide if you are dealing with true science or not. Answer questions explaining your reasoning.We will work as teams with one assignment submitted from each. Thursday- Observation and inference will be the topic for the day.We will start with lecture and close with a worksheet that reinforces the concept. It will not be graded. Friday-Lecture We close our first week together with a revisit to the steps in scientific method.Have a great weekend.

Week of 5/6/2013

Biology... Sadly this week starts our last topic of the year, ecology. Our focus will be on cycles in nature with a lab and work sheet due Tuesday end of class on the predator prey cycle.Wednesday we will look at the benefits of predation over starvation wiht a quiz planned for Thursday. Following the quiz we will look at survivorship curves and track life span patterns for huymans. Lab write up due Friday AP Bio We wrap up a month of evolution with review Monday and test Tuesday.Our exam is May 23 with the few days we have in betweeen we will cover random topics from immune system to dissection of sea stars.Stay tuned for updates.

Week of 4/22/13

Biology This week we continue our study of pathogens with a focus on virus. Monday- will be a full period lecture on the history of virus ,shapes and life cycles. Tuesday-we will complete lecture and demonstrate the spread of virus in a short classroom activity. lab Report due Wednesday. Wednesday-discussion wrap up and worksheet on virus Thursday Jeopardy review Friday will be test day on virus and bacteria. AP Biology We are still focused on evolution. Monday- Activity and worksheet on evolution of behavior Tuesday-A little bit of math will brighted our day with an introduction and practice problems using Hardy Weinberg. Wednesday- a little more practice on HW this time with a fishy frequency lab. Its a good one- you get to eat the materials. Thursday I'm feeling a Quiz up to HW info it won't be included.A new project will be assigned "look who's coming to dinner." You will have some class time to brainstorm and get your ideas together. oral presentations will begin Monday. Friday- work day to complete lab reports and presentations.

Week of April 8 2013

Biology This week our focus will be bacteria. Monday- Introductory lecture on the topic of bacteria Class will start with a lecture on classification of bacteria by shape and arrangement and finish up with microscopic examination of prepared slides to practice your naming skills. Tuesday- Lecture on bacterial culturing followed by lab on growing bacteria on agar Wednesday will be all lab. You will now try to control bacterial growth with products that claim to be antibacterial. Thursday/ Friday depending on growth plate will be a combination of lab and lecture. there will be a bacterial quiz one of these 2 days and lab report will be due for Monday. AP Biology Monday will be lecture on Frontiers in biology. We will discuss, electophoresis,transgenic organisms and plasmids.We will end class with the punnett square worksheet in case there are any questions for tomorrows quiz. Tuesday-We will start with a quiz on Punnett squares and if time permits lecture on Evolution will follow. Wednesday-Lecture supports for evolution followed by Lab Nuttall Techniques Thursday-Lecture population genetics supported by orgami bird lab activity. Friday-complete orgami bird lab address analysis questions

Week of 4/3/13

Biology Hope you had a great break...40 more days to go. Our short week is perfect for completing our discussion on classification. Wed- is lecture on cladistics. there is a worksheet to back up what you learn. Thursday we will finish those worksheets and review for our test on Thursday. Friday is test day.Be ready! AP Biology Aren't Punnett sqares great? I hope the practice is getting rid of the cob webs. Wed. we will continue working on the practice problems. We'll check them together so I can help out anyone who is struggling. Thursday will introduce topics beyond Mendel completing topics on blood type,mutations, and patterns of inheritance.Friday will be a Punnett square test.

BIOLOGY, This week will end our discussion of evolution. Our test is scheduled for Thursday. We will Jeopardy review Wednesday. The remainder of the week will be a series of activities to support our lecture topics. All lab reports will be due on Monday 3/25 and will be counted in next marking period. AP Biology. This week quiz will be Tuesday on Cell cycle and Meiosis. Monday we will introduce DNA replication in Lecture.Follow up lecture and activities for Wed-Friday will focus on transcription translation and the importance of protein in making us who we are.

Sorry to say we start our week with 2 days of lecture on our new topic ...evolution. The good news is Wed-Friday will be activities focusing on fossils and natural selection. Each lab write up is due the day after it is assigned. The activities are fun as well as educational. There will be a Quiz on Thursday and plan for next Wednesday as test day on evolution. Have a great week. AP Bio. We will wrap up our respiration discussion be Tuesday with a short quiz on the topic Wednesday. Our new focus will be the cell cycle and meiosis. Finally some familiar ground. Following the Quiz we will work on a short activityon identifying the time for each stage of the cell cycle. we will wrap up the topic by the end of the week.

Week of March 4th 2013

Bio We wrap up human genetics this week with a Jeopardy review on Monday followed by the test Tuesday.Study hard. There will only be 1 more test this marking period. Wednesday- We will lecture/Intro to the next topic Evolution.This will be our focus for the remainder of the marking period. Thursday- Todays Lecture will explore The development of Darwins Theory of Natural Selection while comparing early theories of evolution with those of Charles Darwin. Friday-A brief intro will summarize events that shaped human evolution. An Opposable Thumb Lab will demonstrate how evolutionary changes directly influence life. Lab will take more than 1 day so we will continue into monday with report due tuesday. AP Biology Monday- We will begin class with a review of the light reaction of photosynthesis.Our main focus will be the calvin cycle and what it accomplishes. Yes sorry to say it is a 2 period lecture. Tuesday-Reinforcement activity on photosynthesis Due Wednesday Wednesday will be a library day webquest on photosynthesis is the topic(surprise). Anything not finished in class is homework.Study for Quiz Thursday will start with a quiz to be followed by an intro to respiration Friday lecture will have you draw and explain the role of the mitochondria as the cellular powerhouse and naming the steps involved in aerobic respiration explaining the role of each in ATP production.

Biology This week we will focus on finishing our discussion of Human genetics.I hope you found our topica interesting and learned a lot. Monday- lecture on polygenic inheritance and sex linked traits. RS on designer babies will be started in class and finished as homework. Tuesday-Short lecture on prebirth genetic testing techniques followed by reinforcement worksheet Wednesday-Bioethical issue survey followed by topic discussion. Thursday 5x5 development on Bioethical issue that impacted you the most. Due for Friday. Friday- Rebop lab to tie all genetic topics together.report due for Monday. AP Bio Monday will be a work day for retests and Lab reports Tuesday jeopardy review of Cell topics in preparation for cell test Wednesday. Wednesday - cell test from origin of life through enzymes Thursday- Intro lecture to photosynthesis focus on the electromagnetic spectrum.Role of light in photosynthesis Friday lab on Pigment extraction RF measures will be calculated. Remeber coacervate lab and enzyme writeups due today.

Biology Hope you had a great long weekend. This week our focus is blood. I hope no one is squeamish! Tuesday-Lecture Blood type history.Why does blood clot? Quiz tomorrow!!! Wednesday QUIZ....Donor recipient blood chart demonstration. Followed by Punnett square session on blood type Inheritance. Thursday-lecture History of Rh and blood types-Practice problems on blood types. Completed blood type worksheets due Friday. Friday-Lab Identifcation of blood types based on antigen antibody clotting response.Lab will be due end of class Monday. AP Biology Tuesday-Lecture- active from passive transport mechanisms providing specific examples of their role in maintaining homeostasis Don't forget polymer Labs are due tomorrow. Wednesday-Lecture Understand the role of enzymes as catalysts, controls on enzyme action and account for denaturing of enzymes.We will reinforce with a worksheet on enzyme action which will be due on Thursday. Thursday and Friday will be enzyme lab/ activities to demonstrate the role of enzymes in chemical reactions.

BIOLOGY We start the week finishing midterms. Tuesday we will start right in with a discussion on mutations. Wednesday will include a little talking to the text followed with analysis questions they will be collected on Thursday. Thursday worksheet on mutations to be finished on Friday. AP Biology This week wraps up our time together. We will check over tests on Tuesday and finalize paper work. Wed and Thursday we will do a lab or 2 that we didn't get to. Friday ia a welcom day to the new AP class and we will start right in with lecture.
